CAPE TO CAPE - ALZHEIMER'S AWARENESS

Back at the end of April 2016, I embarked on a 135km seven day journey from Cape Naturalist to Cape Leeuwin, on foot and alone, to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer's Australia.

This was a fight close to home with my best friend (my nan) being the one suffering with this disease.
I was the one that put their hand up to take her to the home when a spot finally opened up in a facility.

I honestly thought I would be fine because I knew it was the best thing for her.
That was one of the hardest things I have done.
I was crushed leaving her there, but that was the moment that ignited a fire within me.

That night I came home and researched all I could about Dementia and Alzheimer's.
Cures
Stories
Stats
Advice
You name it, I searched it.
It was that same night in December 2015 that I decided I needed to do something to help out.

4 months flew by, and sooner than a later I was commencing my Alzheimer's awareness journey.
To say it was eye opening is an understatement.
I cried every night out of fear of failing a cause so close to home, but as my partner said "being brave isn't about not being scared, its about being scared and doing it anyway".

I have written a short piece on my feelings and emotions, day by day on the Cape.

Cape to Cape.
A breakdown in few words

Day 1: Exhausting and Exciting
Day 2: Challenging and Discouraging
Day 3: Breathtaking and High-Spirited
Day 4: Uncomplicated and Pleasurable
Day 5:  Unnerving and Frightening
Day 6: Friendly and Happily unexpected
Day 7: Both Grateful and Melancholy that it was over

I raised $3456.00 for Alzheimer's Australia and could not have been happier with the help and support I received from friends and family.
I met some amazing people on the Cape also who I would like to give a personal shout out to! You know who you are.

Dementia and Alzheimer's stink, but they more we learn and spread awareness, the more effective we will be in finding a cure.

NYE

Spent my New Years in WA's wine region with some of my most favourite people!

(Photos by Peter Mammerella)

And as another year ends, I am grateful for the people that have come into my life and those who have stayed.
I have an interesting group of friends that I see on the regular, who I have known anywhere between 4 years to 21 years.
Each of these people have brought different things to my life in different times, and I wouldn't be who I am now without them all.
Most have been friends since school, some have joined the group through relationships or work.
No matter how we all managed to get here and become entwined together in this group, I am happy I was in the right place at the right time to be given the chance to get to know you all.

2016 will be the year of noticeable and significant change in my immediate friend group.
People are moving away...
Moving in together...
Hanging out more with other circles of friends...
Working more...

But no matter what happens at the end of the day, I am happy about the choices each individual is making, and I am excited to see where their choices take them
I will always cherish moments like these where I could spend 5 days down south, in a reconstructed shed, with people I have known for over a decade.

Thank you 2015 and the years before that for bringing me to where I am in 2016

All the best everyone!

Accomodation: Stayed in Rosa Brook 10mins from Margaret River town in this converted shed. Booked through airbnb https://www.airbnb.com.au/rooms/7315196

Alate

You may have noticed I have changed the title of my blog.

Alate

It means to have wings.
It generally refers to winged insects, and I have caught as some may say 'the travel bug', so I think it works perfectly with my blog.

Being able to travel as I please is something I value greatly and am incredibly appreciative of.

I hope my entire existence revolves around travel and adventure. Seeking new homes, new places.

Trust your Gut

I found this article on the Free People Blog.

It’s a phrase you’ve likely heard many times throughout your existence, and it’s one that I feel should not go forgotten: Trust your gut. Life throws all different possibilities in our direction every moment, and sometimes the choices we make just can’t be decided on reasoning alone.

You know that little feeling in your gut that, when a possible choice is presented to you, somehow urges you to either do it or not do it, regardless of what your brain may think? Oftentimes that feeling is so strong that it can totally go against all logic. But it shouldn’t be ignored. With around 100 million neurons, the gut is referred to as the second brain by many.
Have you ever had a gut instinct to avoid a certain situation, and then later found out that if you had been in attendance, you would have experienced something pretty unpleasant that popped up? Or have you ever just felt that you needed to do something, beyond any real reasoning, so you did it – and it ended up being one of the most positive experiences in your life? For me, personally, I feel that gut-instinct situations seem to hold value more often than not. So from now on… I’m going to listen to what mine has to say.
The next time you get that little feeling in your gut… that little tingling, twinge, or butterfly-esque feeling that urges you to go one way or another, try not to overpower it with thought. Let it in, let it simmer, let it be. Pay attention to it, and let it weave itself through whatever you may be experiencing in your mind. Your gut may just be smarter than you think.
I think we have all experienced a moment where we have either gone with our against our gut feeling.
I know I have had gut feelings before about something I thought might happen, or be happening behind my back in a sense, and have been correct. And the feeling came out of thin air, it's very bizarre, but also very surreal.

Perth

I have lived in Perth all my life.
Perth isn't rated as high in comparison to our more tropical neighbour the East Coast, but Perth has it own lil gems that not everyone is aware of.

I am generally poor, so this short list of 10 things I am about to write down are either free, cheap, or possibly discounted for the right person.

Enjoy

1. Snorkeling at the beach
Perth is famous for our weather and coastline.
We have a summer that seems to extend over almost half of the year, and our winter is pitiful in comparison to the rest of the country.
Perth has a lot of beautiful coastline, and a lot of beautiful reefs.
You can snorkel most of the coast along the West Coast Highway, such as Mettams Pool and Waterman's bay.
I would also recommend Rottnest Island for snorkeling and just a fun time in general.

2. Rottnest Island
To get to Rottnest is actually kind of expensive, but well worth it once you have arrived.
If you are going to go, get on the ferry from Fremantle, as it is a shorter distance and also a cheaper price. RAC members can go to Rottnest cheaper, $36 dollars return for a one day fare, not available for trips longer than a day though.
Trips longer than a day is around $60 dollars return.
For more information on Rottnest visit their website here, and to book a ferry ticket visit here

3. Blackwall Reach
Blackwall reach is an awesome cliff that people jump off into the Swan River
It is free, fun and relatively safe as long as you don't act like a fool and you make sure you are jumping from the usual jumping spots (look out for lack of vegetation and footprints, or other people jumping)
There will be signs advising not to jump, as they are trying to protect and maintain the cliff, but signpost are notorious for being no fun.
The address is Blackwall Reach Pde, Bicton

4. Comedy Tuesday at the Brisbane Hotel
One of my favourite Tuesday night activities, Shapiro Comedy night at the Brisbane Hotel.
Doors open at 8pm and show finishes around 10.30/11pm.
$5 entry free and a guarantee that you will laugh at least once.
It fills up pretty quickly so try to get to the Brisbane at 7.30pm, get a drink, play some pool, and be prepared.

5. Bingay at Connections
Recently discovered this gem. Bingo every Thursday at Connections Nightclub in the city.
Hosted by Drag Queens, this is a night you won't want to miss.
Starts at 7.30 goes to about 10.30pm and you need to make a booking!
If you don't like men dressed as ladies, offensive language and butt plugs, then this isn't the place for you.
Free entry, BYO Food and we also were given free pizza and free soft drink!
You also have the chance to win a 7 inch dildo, if you need more persuading.
See the link here

6. Luna Cinemas cheap days.
The Luna cinemas are adorable. Very old school looking.
I am all about the cheap deals so:
Tuesday the Windsor Luna and Cinema Paradiso have cheap tickets
and
Wednesday Luna Leederville and Luna on Sx have cheap tickets.
$9.50 before 6pm and $11.50 after 6pm
(prices vary for 3D features)

7. Annalakshmi Restaurant
This restaurant is fantastic in my opinion. It is all Indian, vegetarian dishes and here's the best part, you pay what you feel.
Most people pay around $10 per plate, but if you are super strapped for cash, you can pay $2 if you want.
I love Indian food, so this place was heaven for me. I'm not a vegetarian myself, but you almost don't even realise there is no meat in the food, as it tastes so good!
Link for the restaurant is here

8. Join a Bowls Club
Want cheap drinks? Join a bowls Club!
You can join most bowls club for around $10-$30 for a year, and once you have signed up with one, you can go to any bowls club in Perth, and get the drink discounts.
I am talking jugs of beer as little as $11, and mixed drinks down to $7.
Get a group together, sign up, play some bowls and drink cheap!

9. Santa Fe Cheap Tuesdays
Santa Fe is an awesome Mexican Restaurant in Subiaco that has a really good cheap Tuesday deal.
$3 tacos
$5 coronas
and half price cocktails between 6pm & 7pm!
Make a booking for 6pm and get all the benefits!
Link here

10. Hip Hop Karaoke at the Bird
One Thursday of every month, The Bird in North bridge holds a Hip Hop Karaoke night.
Basically you get up and instead of singing, you rap!
I haven't been myself, but some of my friends have and they rave about it.
Not too sure about the exact dates or the time it starts, so visit their website here, or check them out on facebook.

Well there is 10 different things you can do in Perth.

Enough

”What would be enough?”
“How do you mean?”
“Since no one can have it all, what would be enough for you?”

“For me?... I would want to be able to call the whole world my home.
I don't ever want to have to settle down in one and the same place.
I want to discover the world and I want the world to discover me.
I want to be in no need of luxuries. I want to live simple. I want to own as few things as possible. I want to be rich in other things than money.
I want to be healthy.
I want to work my way through the world and never have to stay in the same place longer than I want to.
I want to learn new things everyday. I want to have deep, meaningful, conversations with strangers.
I want to teach important things to people that don't know them. I want to talk to children and try to understand their world.
I want to help people all over the world, with whatever they need help with. I want to be amazed everyday.
I want to do everything I'm scared of doing. I want to see everything worth seeing.
I want to receive equal to what I give. I want my heart to be in everything I do. I want to laugh everyday. I want to be free to cry whenever needed.
I want music to surround me all the time. I want to always move forward. I want no destination, I only want the journey.
I want to be able to pause and enjoy everything I do. I want to love, a lot.
And I want to put that love into someone else. And I want that love to mean something.
I want it to be important. I want to fall in love hard. I want to fall in love with all the seas, meadows and mountains in the world.
I want beautiful views. I want to live wild and crazy. I want to live on the edge. I want to live and not just survive.
I want to feel that I'm alive. I want to live every second of my life. I want to feel forever young.
I want to be surrounded by people and I want to have my alone time. But I don't ever want to feel lonely.
I want to be strong enough to be on my own. I don't want to have my heart broken and I don't want to break anyone else's.
I want people to remember me and I want them to miss me. I don't ever want to have to leave people behind, If I do, I always want to come back.
I want it to be bright and light. I want no darkness. I want moments that takes my breath away and makes my heart stop.
I want to feel good. I want to love myself. I want to be proud of who I am. I want to fail and I want to succeed.
And I want to learn from it, from everything.
I want to be someone's first choice.
I want to change at least one life.
I want my time on earth to mean something.
I don't want to be afraid to feel. I want to feel excited everyday. I don't want to be afraid to hear the truth.
I want the lies only when it's absolutely necessary. I don't ever want to loose myself along the way.
I always want to be a hundred percent me. I want to believe in forever and I want to prove that I'm right.
I want to dream big. And I want to succeed.
I want more hellos than goodbyes. I don't ever want to have to say farewell.
I want to feel free. I want to live free.
I want to be a good friend. I want to have good friends.
I want people to be able to trust me. And I want to be able to trust people back.
I can take bad days, as long as it is a good life.
I can take the rain, as long as there is sunshine.
All I want, is for me not to be a bad person.
Most of all I want to be happy and I want that feeling to feel like home.
I want to do whatever I want, wherever I want, whenever I want to.
I want to make sure I am not intentionally hurting anyone by doing what I want though.
And I want to do it for me. I want to live my life for no other than myself.
Because that would be enough.”

Well said anonymous. This is exactly how I feel!

Love me a quote on a Friday

“Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every “superstar,” every “supreme leader,” every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand. It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.” — Carl Sagan

10 movies that could change your life

Found here: girlosophy

1.    Imaginary Heroes
Michelle Williams and Emile Hirsch are in fine form here in this tale of family life, secrets and grief. Hilarious and dark by turn in her role as smart-mouthed-mother-losing-her-grip, Sigourney Weaver shows why she can do any acting part justice. There’s a particularly memorable scene on New Years Eve ‘and a few unexpected moments in between that make this film about families a genuine classic.
Top Quote: ‘Tell me what my life would look like Marge, without you and your big mouth!’
2.    Gas Food Lodging
Ione Skye is radiant in Allison Anders quirky story set in the desert where trailers aren’t necessarily associated with trash and vivid dreams are created by watching old black and white Mexican movies. Infused with gorgeous photography and some pretty decent casting, this is a beautiful film about love and redemption.
Top Quote: ‘I don’t know about love, I’m just afraid of not having any dreams.’
3.    Ruby in Paradise
Ashley Judd burst on the indie film scene in this little known release which uber-critic Roger Ebert pronounced one the year’s best in 1993. Ruby is the new girl in town and has to learn fast who’s who in the zoo, how to keep it together when you live on your own and starting over. One of those rare films that sneaks up on you and stays long after.
Top Quote: ‘On the edge of the edge, now it’s up to me…to what I want to be.’
4.    The Joyluck Club
This has more than a few moments of heart piercing sadness, so get the tissues out early for this film about mothers, daughters, friendship and jealousy that criss-crosses countries, generations and decades. Based on Amy Tan’s novel of the same name, this is a sweeping epic that has some memorable one-liners in it (and probably was the genesis of the original so-called ‘tiger mother’ syndrome). A story that is as universal as it is uplifting.
Top Quote: ‘Losing him does not matter, it is you who will be found’.
5.    The Opposite of Sex
Lisa Kudrow of Friends fame, plays deadpan meets uptight to perfection. Christina Ricci is maddening as the manipulative Dedee who is far too clever for her own good but lacks the empathy to drive her smarts into any real achievement. Funny and crazy, there’s a lot to enjoy here and a few life lessons too.
Top Quote: ‘This is how we do things on the Planet Maturity!’
6.    Map of the Human Heart
One of the first films to ever feature real Inuit (Eskimos) and their language and starring the impossibly gorgeous Jason Scott Lee, this film might have spawned the lesser Pearl Harbour. Featuring a love scene on top of a blimp that should probably go down as the most creative of its type committed to film, this is a must-see that will require a whole box of tissues. You have been warned.
Top Quote: ‘I dreamed I would be married to a white man’
7.    White Oleander
This copped a lot of unfair criticism from a ton of male critics, but the film adaptation of Janet Fitch’s novel features a stellar cast and a strong performance from newcomer Alison Lohman as Astrid, a foster child whose mother is as beautiful as she is dangerous. Evocative soundtrack on a par with American Beauty makes it haunting and eerily real. Renee Zellweger is a revelation. Robin Wright-Penn earns her stripes too.
Top Quote: ‘This is the price of what you did Mother.’
8.    The Upside of Anger
Don’t be put off by the title, this is a gem if only for Joan Allen’s scathing portrayal of a suburban mother and Kevin Costner’s return to form as a past-it ball player with a past. Felicity’s Keri Russell is here as is Thirteen’s Evan Rachel Wood and it’s a wild ride. Take it.
Top Quote: ‘Have you ever heard of boundaries?’
9.    Water
Deepa Mehta’s final instalment of her trilogy (Fire / Earth / Water), that examines the lives of women in India. These women have had the misfortune that their husbands have died including little Chulia who was only a child bride, condemning her to a life of poverty and seclusion. Visually splendid, Water is ultimately uplifting and a story of hope.
Top Quote: ‘What is good should not die out. But who will decide what is good?’
10. Japanese Story
Toni Collette has been in some cracker films and Japanese Story is certainly one of them. It is more timely than ever given the mining boom going on in the Kimberley Region. Could be seen as a more serious precursor to Red Dog, but no less important for the cultural messages it examines.
Top Quote: ‘In Japan we have no space. There is nothing, it scares me.’ You have shown me something beautiful.’

Chelsea Wall's Poem

I want to be a lost poem in a stranger’s coat pocket
That conveys the importance of you
To assure you of my desire
To assure you of my dreams
I want all the possibilities of you in writing
I want to give you your reflection
I want your eyes on me
I want to travel to the lightness with you and stay there
And I want everything before you to follow us and can trail behind me
I want to never say goodbye to you.
Even on the street corner or the phone
I want…
I want so much I’m breathless
I wanna put my power into a poem to burn a hole in your pocket, so I can sew it
I want my words to scream through you
I want the poem not to mean that much
I want to contradict myself by accident and for you to know what I mean
I want you to be distant and for me to feel you close
I want endless days when it’s day and night time never to end when it’s night
I want all the seasons in one day
I want the sun to set up before us and come up in front of us.
I want to water up to our waists and I want to be drenched by rain up to our ankles with holes in our shoes
I want to think your thoughts because they are mine
I want only what is urgent with you
I want to get in the way of the barriers and I want you to be a tough guy when you’re suppose to be like you are already
And I want you to be tender
Ant I wanna say we met for a reason
And I want that reason to be important
And I want it to be bigger than us, I want it to take over us
I want to forget, I want to remember us
And I want your smile always and your grimaces too.
I want your scars on my lips
I want your disappointments in my heart
I want your strength in my soul
And I want your soul in my eyes
I want to believe everything you say and I do
And I want you tell me what’s best when I don’t know
And when you’re lost I want to find you
When you’re weary I want to give you steeples, cathedral thoughts, and coliseum dream
I want to drag you from the darkness and kneel with you exhausted with the blinding light blaring on us…
And…

Rays

Did you know there is an actual word for those ‘god like’ rays that the sun makes when it’s spiking out from behind the clouds – they’re called ‘crepuscular rays‘. It’s such a scientific name for such a gorgeous phenomenon.

Timeless...

I was thinking the other day how fast humans are evolving.
We are coming up with new ways to keep people alive
Prevent diseases.
The homes we live in and the utensils we use.
How to stay in touch.
Even the food we eat.

One thing that will never change though is how we are affected by love.
Our first loves
Our soul mates
Breaking up
Losing loved ones
Drifting apart
Building a life together.

Its actually incredible, no matter how much time passes and how we all evolve and change, we will all still be affected by love.
And at the end of the day, it puts me at ease.
Atleast at the end of it all, something I will have in common with people older and younger than me will be love.

“I am nothing special, of this I am sure. I am a common man with common thoughts and I've led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten, but I've loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me, this has always been enough..”

Letting go

LETTING GO TAKES LOVE

To let go does not mean to stop caring,
it means I can't do it for someone else.
To let go is not to cut myself off,
it's the realization I can't control another.
To let go is not to enable,
but allow learning from natural consequences.
To let go is to admit powerlessness, which means
the outcome is not in my hands.
To let go is not to try to change or blame another,
it's to make the most of myself.
To let go is not to care for,
but to care about.
To let go is not to fix,
but to be supportive.
To let go is not to judge,
but to allow another to be a human being.
To let go is not to be in the middle arranging all the outcomes,
but to allow others to affect their destinies.
To let go is not to be protective,
it's to permit another to face reality.
To let go is not to deny,
but to accept.
To let go is not to nag, scold or argue,
but instead to search out my own shortcomings and correct them.
To let go is not to adjust everything to my desires,
but to take each day as it comes and cherish myself in it.
To let go is not to criticize or regulate anybody,
but to try to become what I dream I can be.
To let go is not to regret the past,
but to grow and live for the future.

To let go is to fear less and love more
Remember: The time to love is short

It use to be easier

An entry a found on Le Love about the ever changing patterns of commitment.

It used to be easier.

In Austen's day, the most eligible men were the ones with money. A comfortable lifestyle was more desirable than love. Read Pride and Prejudice... Love didn't concur all, and when love disappointed marriage was made to the next available suitor, with love blossoming in time.

Our grandparents made it work. They married their high school sweethearts, their first loves. They didn't have any emotional baggage, they lived in a time where divorce was frowned upon and they had different morals instilled in them - when they committed for life, they meant it. Maybe they weren't always the best matches, maybe they missed out on greater happiness, but if they ever thought that way, they didn't act on it.

Then comes our parents.
Where divorce is prevalent.
Where the majority of us are from broken homes,
Where those of us with happily married parents are the exception,
Where we have step parents,
Ex step parents,
Our parent's girlfriends or boyfriends,
Our parent's same sex life partners,
Our parent's secret other families that they've hidden from us for years ...
Our parents seem to have had children, hit rough patches and fallen apart. They entered a time where there was more choice and less pressure and their ideas of forever disappeared.

So what can be expected of us? We've grown up in an environment where divorce is normal. Marriage vows have changed from "til death do us part" to "as long as our love shall last". And that's for the ones that make it to the vows... these days it seems that getting engaged isn't even a true commitment, girls rack up engagements like credit card debt.

We seem to suffer a fear of commitment these days... even signing up for a term contract to the gym or a phone company we need to hear the ways we can get out of it early to reassure us before we enter.
We enter relationships and start to think about the reasons it will end before it's even started.
We enter relationships we know will never work out, simply because they are enjoyable.
It seems we're on the look out for the next best thing,
We think marrying young is stupid, yet we look at older singles and think they'll die alone.
We know what we want, until it's presented to us and then we change our minds.
We've been given all these expectations of what love should be like and when it's different we give up.
We have too many options, too many expectations, too much history, too little perception about what is really valuable.
